About Me

Hello, you have reached the blog of the Catholic Lawyer Mama. Please leave a message after the beep. BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!

Oh, shoot, wrong forum! Well, anyway, welcome to my humble abode, er, um, I mean, blog. It is a pleasure to have you! Please kick back, put your feet up, look around, and stay awhile!

So, about me . . .

First thing is first: God has blessed my life abundantly. Wow, no joke there. I have an amazing husband of (almost) five years and three beautiful sons (all under 4 years old at the moment!). Both my husband and I work full-time (okay, more than full-time) jobs outside of the home and, as you may have guessed, I am a lawyer! I graduated from Notre Dame Law School and am the product of 19 years of Catholic education. I am definitely Catholic, but I would have to say that I am more of a "revert" than a "cradle Catholic", mostly because I didn't always really "get it" or "live it" when it came to being Catholic. But I try harder now, so that's a plus! In keeping with my aspirations to become a better Catholic, I have tried to commit to all things Catholic, including natural family planning (NFP). If you have never heard of it, suffice it to say that it is a very effective way of tracking a woman's "fertile" and "non-fertile" times each month and acting accordingly. God has designed women that way, and it's pretty smart (and very effective) actually. At the end of the day, I don't put my trust in contraceptives, but I entrust my fertility to God for Him to use to His will. Which, actually, is a pretty scary thing considering that I have what many would consider a "high-powered" career in "Big Law" (i.e., I work for a major law firm for mostly big corporate clients on big dollar cases). I love my work, but I raise a lot of eyebrows because, well, I just keep on getting pregnant! Which brings me to the best part - my children. Three boys! And I've only been married to my amazing husband for not-quite five years! My husband and boys are the loves of my life. Really. Truly. Madly. Deeply. Okay, so who remembers that song from Savage Garden? It was a high school prom classic! Yeesh . . . I'm definitely showing my age here!

So, there you are -- welcome to my personal life-sized version of insanity! I'm living it and loving it!

Now, it actually is time for you to leave a message after the beep. So, here goes: BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP. :)

  1. Hi there! I was so excited when I saw your blog on the 7QT link-up. Another Catholic Lawyer Mom, wha??? I'm so eager to read more. I did a stint in Big Law, too, but left right b/f my first was born. I've worked off and on part time (right now barely at all) since then. So impressed with all you're doing right now. Anyway, glad I came across your blog, and I look forward to reading more!

  2. Laura, I'm so glad you commented --- there aren't nearly enough of us out there, and it is so good to connect online! Would love to hear more about your journey. I have definitely thought about working part-time or cutting back; it is a very tough decision. Do you struggle finding part-time/flex-time options? For now, my life is insane, but it's a happy-crazy-chaos, and it seems to be working (most of the time at least). I figure that can't be a coincidence (particularly since I like my work and we need the paycheck). God has led me this far, and He is definitely a better navigator than I am! Anyway, I'm so happy to e-meet you and hope you enjoy reading along!

  3. Hi, I also just found you through 7QT linkup. I'm also a Catholic Lawyer (soon-to-be) Mom . . . I graduated in 2012, just wrapped up a one-year clerkship, and am due with number 1 in Feb. My husband is a JAG and we just found out where we'll be stationed the next 2 years so I'm on the job hunt... Anyway, I find your blog so inspiring. I will definitely be following along!

  4. Theresa, congratulations on the baby!!! I'm so glad you commented. It is a crazy life, but a blessed life. Welcome to the club! :) Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and the new addition. And don't stress about the job hunt too much (if that's possible). In my own life, the only "constant" has been that God puts me where He wants me to be when He wants me to be there. Even if it might not seem like it yet, He will do the same for you. You are in my prayers. Have a safe and healthy delivery! Blessings!

  5. I'm so glad I came across your blog!! I am not a mother, but I just got married and I hope God blesses us with children some day. When I entered law school, all of my family told me I was crazy because being a lawyer is "not conducive to having a family" or "being a good person." haha! So, it's always refreshing to see that I am not the only person out there who is managing to pull it off...and still be a good person! And you have the kids edge on me! So it is possible! And I am a devout Catholic as well and am always refreshed to know there are other Catholic ladies in the legal profession :) Looking forward to reading your blog more!

    1. Welcome! Thank you so much for your sweet comment and compliments! While I can't say that I've come across a lot of Catholic ladies in the legal profession, we do exist! Balance can be tough, especially with a big Catholic family, but it is possible (especially if you hubby is as awesome as mine!). Speaking of, congratulations on your marriage! That's such an exciting time! Blessings to you!

  6. Oh, I'm so happy to find your blog! Another Catholic lawyer mom here. Also a Domer (undergrad). And also three boys! - in seven years of marriage. I was in Big Law - transactional real estate - until just after my second was born and then thankfully, after a year of looking, landed in a smaller firm with a boss who was also a Big Law refugee and it's worked very well. I'm part-time now since Baby #3 and it's a challenge to keep it to "part-time" but it's been a real blessing since I do enjoy the work. It's hard to balance but I'm really thankful for it. Would be happy to talk sometime if you ever want to about part-time and life after Big Law. And I'll put you on my feed reader :)

  7. I know this post is a few years old, but it's a God-send! I'm applying to law schools right now, and I know I want to be a wife and a mother. I've felt called to be a lawyer since high school. And yet, it's impossible to find practicing Catholic mothers who are lawyers. It's so encouraging to know that it is possible to be one.

    1. Thank you so much for your comment! I wish you all the best with the law school application process. Gosh, I remember how stressful that was. Sending prayers your way! The legal profession is a great profession. And, yes, it is possible to be a Catholic mom and a lawyer! It's not always easy, and I have come to know that I cannot do everything perfectly all of the time, but I do my very best, and I'm learning to accept that. I am so sorry that I have been woefully inept at keeping this blog updated. But, in the craziness of life, something just had to give. I hope to come back and blog more regularly in the future! :)
